Infrared spectroscopy is one of the most widely used techniques for the recognition of unknown substances and for the physico-chemical characterization of materials and offers, in many cases, the possibility of carrying out even quantitative analyzes. It can be applied to any type of sample in a simple way and allows analysis even at a microscopic level on specimens up to one micron in size. It is also possible to take measurements at any temperature and pressure. The sample preparation and recording times of the infrared spectrum are short and solid, liquid and gaseous materials can be investigated. In the plastics sector in particular, the use of infrared spectroscopy associated with accelerated degradation techniques for the study of photodegradation kinetics and for the quantitative recognition of additives with high sensitivity even up to 500 ppm of additive is interesting.
