OCTOBER 7, 2026: DEGRADATION OF PLASTICS AND ACCELERATED AGING TECHNIQUES

Under the action of: air (oxygen), light, air (wind), dust, atmospheric pollutants, microorganisms, particular environments (salt water, petrol,...), materials change chemically and mechanically (degrade). In particular, for plastic materials, the degradation mechanism is specific for each type of material/polymer. These degradation mechanisms are the basis of the chemistry of stabilization, differentiated into specific degradation events. The need that arises is to predict these degradation mechanisms: starting from the assumption that a precise simulation is impossible, some standard procedures for exposing materials have been developed over time so that, at least between them, there can be an acceptable reproducibility of the results. There are instruments and methodologies that are generally used to subject materials to accelerated aging cycles compared to natural exposure.

COURSE PROGRAM
Theoretical part: degradation of plastic materials, description of accelerated aging techniques and relationships with natural ageing. The different regulations and parameters to be defined (irradiance, temperatures, humidity, cycles, etc.).

Practical part: illustration of aging machines (Xenon and UV). Examples of sample placement. Maintenance and costs related to aging tests.
